FC2153

FC2153

Low temperature glass body pH electrode

Refillable spherical glass pH electrode with built-in temperature sensor

FC2153 is a glass body, refillable single junction pH electrode with a quick connect DIN connector. This electrode features a triple ceramic junction in the outer reference cell and the pH sensing bulb is made of low temperature glass.

FC2153 uses low temperature (LT) glass, spherical bulb, glass body, triple ceramic junction, refillable with 3.5M KCl + AgCl.

Low Temperature Glass Formulation

Measuring the pH of a solution at low temperatures can be difficult due to the effect temperature has on the resistance of the glass membrane. Standard pH electrodes use general purpose (GP) glass that has a resistance of 100 megohms at 25°C. This resistance will increase as the temperature decreases. If the resistance increases above the normal range, the measurement will be affected. Some pH electrodes use low temperature (LT) glass as the pH sensitive glass membrane. LT glass has a resistance of about 50 megohms at 25°C. As the temperature of the glass decreases, the resistance of the LT glass approaches that of GP glass. The FC2153 is made of LT glass and is suitable for samples from 0 to 70°C.

Spherical Bulb

The spherical bulb is used for general purpose. Other shapes include conical for penetration and flat for surface measurements.

Glass Body

A glass body is ideal for laboratory use. The glass is resistant to many harsh chemicals and is easy to clean. The glass body also allows for a fast transfer of heat to the internal reference electrolyte. The mV generated by the reference cell is temperature dependent. The faster the equilibrium is reached, the more stable the reference potential.

Triple Ceramic Junction

The triple ceramic junction allows a faster flow rate of electrolyte from the reference cell into the solution. A standard pH electrode will use a single ceramic junction that allows for 15 to 20 μL/hr of electrolyte flow; the FC2153 has three ceramic junctions providing for 40 to 50 μL/hr of electrolyte flow. This high flow rate provides for a faster electrode response and a more stable measurement in low conductivity samples such as drinking water.

Refillable

The FC2153 is a refillable probe. It is a single junction pH electrode that uses HI7071 3.5M KCl + AgCl electrolyte fill solution. If using a refillable pH electrode, the fill cap should be loosened/removed prior to calibration and measurement. Loosening/removing the cap creates a positive head pressure in the reference cell that increases the flow rate of electrolyte through the outer junction. A higher flow rate will result in a faster and more stable reading.

Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Municipal Wastewater Treatment · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case

Project Overview

The site is the inlet, biological and outlet stages of a municipal plant. The customer wanted Hanna properly configured on the existing plant, with the aim of covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.

Technical Challenges

What actually causes trouble is high solids and corrosive fractions, with large diurnal flow swings, and effluent parameters drift and probes foul with sludge and biofilm. All of this means the Hanna configuration has to involve selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.

Configuration

Supply and installation were organised through the stock channel: configuring from stock and delivered quickly. On site this meant selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, checked line by line against: stable compliance with Grade 1A discharge limits and online data reporting.

Performance

After commissioning the outcome is results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, and the readings are now used for process tuning.

Food & Beverage

Food & Beverage · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case

Site Conditions

This is a Food & Beverage customer whose plant is at dosing, pasteurising, filling and CIP stages. The main task was covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.

The Problem

The difficulty lies in syrups, dairy and beverages that scale easily, under strict hygienic requirements; at the same time frequent cleaning demands instruments that withstand hot CIP/SIP caustic cycles. Specification therefore means selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.

What We Did

We took a stock channel approach — configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Delivery was built around selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, with point-by-point checks on: food-safety and hygienic design per 3-A / EHEDG.

Operating Outcome

In service the system performs as intended — results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, with routine maintenance falling noticeably.

Chemical & Pharmaceutical

Application Context

reactors, metering vessels and finished-product tanks is a typical Chemical & Pharmaceutical duty. The project started from Hanna, focusing on covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.

Process Constraints

corrosion plus Ex protection shortens instrument life and makes downtime costly, and highly corrosive media with solvents and crystallisation, partly in explosive atmospheres only amplify it. The Hanna specification must therefore cover selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.

Delivery Approach

Delivery was handled as the stock channel — configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Execution centred on selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, together with Ex certification and GMP traceability of records.

Field Results

Operation shows the benefit clearly — results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, with confidence in this measuring point improving markedly.

Power & Energy

Power & Energy · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case

Customer Profile

The typical setting in Power & Energy is boiler feedwater, turbine condensate and FGD/DeNOx systems. The measuring point is Hanna; the focus is covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.

Key Difficulties

Conditions are high temperature and pressure with both steam and saline water and, on top of that, drift under high temperature and pressure, with very costly unplanned outages, which a standard configuration cannot handle for long. The design therefore starts with selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.

Implementation

The scope ran through the stock channel: configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Technically it hinges on selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, and on these requirements: compliance with power-industry codes and unit availability targets.

Customer Benefit

In practice this means results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, which cut the workload on the site maintenance team.
