Product Overview
HI4002 is a solid-state, half-cell ion-selective electrode (ISE) for determining bromide (Br-) in solution. The sensing element uses silver bromide particles that produce a potential change due to the bromide ion exchange between the inorganic particle membrane and the sample, and the internal sensing element is housed in a durable epoxy body. The HI4002 is ideal for a variety of applications in the pharmaceutical industry, laboratories, drinking water and wastewater treatment, food and beverage production and printing processes.
The HI4002 bromide-selective electrode is a potentiometric half-cell sensor mounted in an epoxy body. The internal element is isolated from the sample by a compressed silver bromide sensing membrane. This solid-state sensor requires a separate reference electrode to complete the measurement system.
Key Features
- Solid-state sensor: measurement range of 0.08 to 79910 mg/L Br-.
- Reference half-cell required: This solid-state sensor requires a separate reference half-cell (such as the HI5315) to complete the measurement system.
- Fixed sensing module: solid-state half-cell ISEs are electrodes that detect free ions in solution; the highly insoluble, compressed sensing particles are attached to the HI4002 bromide half-cell through a fixed sensing module for ease of use.
- Durable epoxy body: the probe body of the HI4002 bromide half-cell ISE is made of durable epoxy.
- BNC connection: the HI4002 has a universal BNC connector that easily connects to any benchtop meter with a female BNC probe input.
- Theory of operation: Solid-state sensor electrodes generate a voltage due to the ion exchange that takes place between the solution and the inorganic membrane. Because the solubility of the membrane material in the sample is very limited, an equilibrium is reached; when the ionic strength of the solution is fixed by adding ISA, the voltage is proportional to the concentration of free ions in the solution.
Compatible Meters
Hanna's solid-state half-cell ISEs are designed for use with the HI5315 reference half-cell. The reference half-cell has a cone connection; the cone geometry of the reference forms a liquid junction with the test solution at the tip of the connection cone, producing a highly stable reference potential and a consistent flow of electrolyte into the solution. Simply press gently on the top of the ISE to easily empty the electrolyte filling solution and replace it when necessary.
Usage Notes
For the HI4002 to measure bromide accurately, it is important to adjust the ionic strength of the standards and samples to a high, constant value with a halide ionic strength adjuster (ISA) solution. The halide ISA ensures a constant activity coefficient, so the concentration of free bromide ions can be measured. Measuring all solutions at a constant ionic strength reduces errors between measurements. The HI4002 bromide solid-state ISE has a measurement range of 1 µM (0.08 mg/L) to 1M (79910 mg/L).

Case Studies
Municipal Wastewater Treatment · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case
Project Overview
The site is the inlet, biological and outlet stages of a municipal plant. The customer wanted Hanna properly configured on the existing plant, with the aim of covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.
Technical Challenges
What actually causes trouble is high solids and corrosive fractions, with large diurnal flow swings, and effluent parameters drift and probes foul with sludge and biofilm. All of this means the Hanna configuration has to involve selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.
Configuration
Supply and installation were organised through the stock channel: configuring from stock and delivered quickly. On site this meant selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, checked line by line against: stable compliance with Grade 1A discharge limits and online data reporting.
Performance
After commissioning the outcome is results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, and the readings are now used for process tuning.
Food & Beverage · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case
Site Conditions
This is a Food & Beverage customer whose plant is at dosing, pasteurising, filling and CIP stages. The main task was covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.
The Problem
The difficulty lies in syrups, dairy and beverages that scale easily, under strict hygienic requirements; at the same time frequent cleaning demands instruments that withstand hot CIP/SIP caustic cycles. Specification therefore means selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.
What We Did
We took a stock channel approach — configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Delivery was built around selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, with point-by-point checks on: food-safety and hygienic design per 3-A / EHEDG.
Operating Outcome
In service the system performs as intended — results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, with routine maintenance falling noticeably.
Chemical & Pharmaceutical · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case
Application Context
reactors, metering vessels and finished-product tanks is a typical Chemical & Pharmaceutical duty. The project started from Hanna, focusing on covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.
Process Constraints
corrosion plus Ex protection shortens instrument life and makes downtime costly, and highly corrosive media with solvents and crystallisation, partly in explosive atmospheres only amplify it. The Hanna specification must therefore cover selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.
Delivery Approach
Delivery was handled as the stock channel — configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Execution centred on selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, together with Ex certification and GMP traceability of records.
Field Results
Operation shows the benefit clearly — results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, with confidence in this measuring point improving markedly.
Power & Energy · Hanna — Stock Configuration Case
Customer Profile
The typical setting in Power & Energy is boiler feedwater, turbine condensate and FGD/DeNOx systems. The measuring point is Hanna; the focus is covering portable and laboratory water testing with Hanna instruments.
Key Difficulties
Conditions are high temperature and pressure with both steam and saline water and, on top of that, drift under high temperature and pressure, with very costly unplanned outages, which a standard configuration cannot handle for long. The design therefore starts with selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability.
Implementation
The scope ran through the stock channel: configuring from stock and delivered quickly. Technically it hinges on selected by parameter set, accuracy and field portability, and on these requirements: compliance with power-industry codes and unit availability targets.
Customer Benefit
In practice this means results available on site, reducing lab re-checks, which cut the workload on the site maintenance team.
