El analizador de níquel total HMA-TNI utiliza detección colorimétrica espectrofotométrica con digestión a alta temperatura de la muestra; el reactivo de digestión se añade a la muestra, que después se bombea a la unidad de digestión a alta temperatura. El níquel total de la muestra se digiere hasta iones de níquel divalente. En presencia de un oxidante (persulfato de amonio), los iones de níquel divalente forman en solución alcalina un complejo coloreado de color pardo anaranjado con la dimetilglioxima. La medición espectrofotométrica se realiza a 470 nm; comparando la diferencia entre el color inicial de la muestra y su color tras añadir el reactivo cromógeno, se determina la concentración de la muestra.
